Sadly, and maybe fortunately, we can’t know everything. It is a gift to be open to new thoughts, opinions, options.


Let’s think about some key phrases and suggested actions that may help urge an open mindset for you.


  • I’m curious, do you agree?  If not, what might change your mind?

  • Seek information that challenges your assumptions.

  • Don’t confuse confidence with competence.

  • Harness the benefit of doubt.

  • Embrace the joy of being wrong. 

  • Focus less on proving yourself and instead in improving yourself.  

  • Invite your challenge network to challenge your views.

  • Ask better questions.

  • Increase your question to statement ratio.

  • Practice persuasive listening.

  • Ask how instead in why.

  • Ask how others formed their opinion.

  • Acknowledge common grounds.

  • Less is more, especially when giving reasons and argument.

  • Reinforce freedom of choice.

  • Have a conversation about the conversation.

  • Flexing contentious topics.

  • Caveats and contingencies give you more options.

  • Expand and profess emotional range.

  • Embrace confusion and don’t expect perfection in the first draft.

  • Abandon best practices.  Keep rethinking and striving for effective practices.

  • Keep a rethinking score card.

  • Throw out a 10 year plan.

  • Passions are developed not just discovered.

  • Schedule a life checkup.

  • Schedule time to rethink or relearn.
